Iron Seated Buddha, Tang Dynasty or Earlier

We are offering a beautiful Chinese seated buddha with elegant simple garment fold in early Gupta style sculpture. The Buddha seated in a meditating position with a long rectangular face and tall hair knob typical of Northern Wei dynasty style. The garment fold lines were meticulously laid out to form a wonderful three-dimensional geometric pattern. The hollow-cast iron statue originally must have been attached to a base with its protruding rectangular socket at the base. The back of the Buddha is undecorated with two protruding iron pegs for attaching mandorla. There is a small missing chip at the end of its left ear lobe. Other than the small chip, the magnificent iron Buddha is in excellent condition with superb patina. This is a very beautiful Chinese antiquities item which can be dated to 8th Century or earlier.
