Jade Boulder with deer among tree, Liao Dynasty

Up for auction is a fine and beautiful celadon jade boulder from the Liao Dynasty (907-926 A.D.) with elaborate openwork decoration of deers among palm tree. The lively scene of three deers on each side of the boulder was executed with precise and artistic lapidary skill. The end product is a magnificent three-dimensional works of art which retains the unrestrained Liao style of presenting natural scene which is commonly represented on Liao fabrics, metal works, Ceramics, and murals. We date this large jade carving to Liao Dynasty due to its decorative motif, the type of celadon jade and the elaborate openwork which are typical of that period. This is another fine early Chinese antiquities item for serious collectors.
